Cleopatra, Egypt's tempestuous female monarch, was as famous for wearing Emeralds as Liz Taylor is for wearing diamonds. Ancient Egyptian mummies were often buried wearing an Emerald carved with the symbol of verdure – flourishing greenness – on their necks to symbolize eternal youth. Today, Emerald is the birthstone for May and is as well as for the 20th and 35th wedding anniversaries.

Get To Know Your August Birthstone

As August comes around, we’re here to introduce the birthstone for this month: Peridot. Peridots are one of the few gemstones that occur in only one color: an olive-green. The intensity and tint of the green, however, depends on the percentage of iron in the crystal structure, so the color of individual Peridot gems can vary from yellow, to olive, to brownish-green.
